Myanmar Health Partnership

Myanmar Nephrourology Society and the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh Health Partnership

The Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh has a long and fruitful relatinship with surgeons in Myanmar. In recent times, this relationship has grown and developed in the area of surgical training. A partnership between, David Tolley, Past President of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh and Kyaw Zwa Hlaing, Head of Urology at Yangon General Hospital, led to the creation of a surgical curriculum development and training project which began in April 2015 and was completed in April 2017.

The project has enabled our partners in Myanmar to progress towards a sustainable programme of training and assessment, thereby strengthening surgical training capacity with local expertise, with continued support and input from the College where requested.

The longer term goal is to move towards developing a sustainable surgical training environment in Myanmar with local surgeons who are able to carry out the training themselves. In turn, there is much the College can learn from our project partners and we hope that further opportunities for partnership working will arise in Myanmar.
